Benefits of Mulching & Which Type of Mulch to Use

“Mulching” is the term used to describe the process of applying a protective layer of material to the top of the soil – whether it be pine straw, bark chips, plastic sheeting, ground/shredded leaves, etc. There are many benefits of mulching, which include but are not limited to the following:

Suppress Weed Growth

Weeds steal water and nutrients from your existing plants. They can be a nuisance and tend to take over. Because weeds need sunlight and warmth from the soil to grow, applying a generous enough layer of mulch to block out sunlight should keep weeds from having enough energy to grow and sprout through.

Conserve Soil Moisture

Mulch reduces the amount of water lost through evaporation when it is hot, by providing a layer of shade to the soil. It also acts as an insulator and maintains the consistent temperature of the roots of plants.

Improve Fertility of Soil

When using natural or organic products for mulching especially, nutrient availability is being enhanced and in turn, is creating a sustainable environment in which plants can grow.

Protect Newly Planted Trees/Shrubs/Flowers & Their Roots

Mulching reduces the competition for water consumption by grasses and other surrounding plants when placed around newly planted items. It helps the soil that these items are planted in retain moisture after being watered or when it rains.

Enhance Visual Appearance

Choosing colored mulch that compliments the exterior colors of the home, building, or surrounding plants can enhance the visual appearance. If an area has been re-mulched, be sure to remove some of the old mulch that has built up and replace it with a new product. Choosing the correct color or texture of mulch can certainly give the area a more finished, refined look.
